Spending New Year’s in South Beach?

November 11th, 2008

South Beach, Miami is one of the hottest destinations for New Year’s eve parties in the world. The nightlife scene is already notorious, but for one night each year the party crowd manages to take it up a notch with some of the most decadent, over the top blowout celebrations the world has ever seen. Over the last couple years, stars like Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, Pete Wentz, Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba have hosted some of the most popular parties at Mansion, Prive, Opium Garden, SET, and Mokai. Luckily for the rest of us, the best night of the year is also one of the easiest nights to actually get into the clubs and rub elbows with the stars.

South Beach clubs are renowned (and despised) for their velvet rope policies, usually consisting of a tall, dark, chiseled cheekbone sort of guy in a Brioni suit letting in the beautiful people while the rest of us stand to the side and try to catch a name or two to drop when the time is right. It can be ego assassination for some, and for others an opportunity to become someone for the night. Either way, the whole event is a test of character and ability to stay cool under pressure. And that’s all before you even get inside.

Thankfully, New Year’s eve in South Beach is open to everyone, you just need to be one of the lucky people who pick up tickets in time. One of the most famous nightlife groups in the world, SoBeVIPs, offers tickets through their flagship website, SoBeNewYears.com, to the most popular parties around. At the site you can pick up both table reservations, perfect for large groups, as well as individual general admission tickets - literally the ticket you need to get in and get the party started. This year, some of the most popular parties consist of:

Our advice to take advantage of a huge New Year’s lineup in Miami? Get your tickets early and don’t wait too long to pick them up once you arrive in South Beach. Tickets sell out quickly and are not available at the door. Will call lines are usually very long over the last couple days before New Year’s Eve, so be sure to get in and pick up your tickets early. On New Year’s Eve the nightclubs open a little earlier than the usual - most around 10:30pm. Arrive early and take advantage of the open bar and free party favors!

Most Expensive Bottle Service

October 27th, 2008

Andrew Goldberg has waited tables at Town, Chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s flashy Manhattan restaurant, but when it comes to making tips, he says he’s only now got the best gig in town.

Mokai MiamiMokai Miami

The 29-year-old Goldberg is a “host” at one of the hottest nightclubs in the city, Marquee, where a 20% gratuity is automatically added to every “bottle service” tab.

And where said tabs–for patrons who reserve a table in advance then shell out hundreds for marked-up bottles of booze, often adhering to a multiple-bottle minimum rule–can easily run between $1,000 to $10,000.

In Pictures: Super-Pricey Bar Tabs

At your local spirits shop, a bottle of premium Grey Goose vodka sells for around $40. But at Marquee that same bottle with all the cocktail fixings (fruit juices and soda water, for example,) will set you back $375 before tax and tip. And even that won’t get you a table for which a two-bottle minimum is typically required, says Goldberg. Like most clubs, Marquee has a “three- to four-guest maximum” per bottle.

“At Marquee, [where the least expensive bottle you can buy is $325] you’re talking about a $650 minimum. That’s $130 in tips alone just for the privilege of sitting down,” says Goldberg, who notes that gratuities are generally pooled.

“Add the up-sell of high-energy drinks and Red Bull or the popular $13 shots of Patron,” he says, “and the tips can go through the roof.”

He works hard for the money: As host, it’s Goldberg’s job to bring veeps into the club and to make sure they’re extremely well taken care of once they sit down. That can mean anything from making sure the lemon twist is fresh, to assuring “the flow” of attractive women is steady and compelling at bottle service tables.

Pricey Pours
We polled everyone from nightlife bloggers to online “brokers” who help regular Joes get VIP booths in posh clubs, to find out who has the most expensive bottle service in the country. There may be some hot spots that don’t advertise their bottle service or keep costs under wraps.

To keep a level playing field, we compared the cost of a bottle of Grey Goose at each to see which liquid lairs would make the list (most bottle-service dollars are spent on vodka and Champagne).

Predictably, the most expensive were in Las Vegas ( Blush, $475), New York ( Gansevoort Spa & Lounge, $350), Miami ( Mokai, $340) and Los Angeles ( Le Deux, $425). In Middle America, where the trend has now migrated with a vengeance, bottle service, which allows customers to pour their own drinks, is still a relative bargain. At Gelo Ultra Lounge, a hot spot in Indianapolis, Grey Goose runs only $200.

But very few customers stop at just one. Marquee’s Goldberg says late in the night, when intoxication runs high, the bottle buying “becomes contagious” and he sometimes has to step in to prevent good customers from making costly mistakes.

“I won’t tell someone to stop drinking because that could be embarrassing,” he says, “but I do steer them toward a bottle of Moet, for example, over a Don Perignon.” Adds Goldberg: “The client is usually grateful when he gets the credit card statement.”

It’s this bottle fever, and the multi-bottle minimums that certain clubs impose on weekends, that had New York City officials threatening to crack down on bottle service earlier this year, arguing that it encourages bulk drinking.

It’s also what made Elizabeth Peterson decide not to provide bottle service at her sexy new lounge/bar, Bordello, in downtown Los Angeles.

“With bottle service, it’s hard to control whether or not people are being over served, and I didn’t want my service staff to have to deal with that,” says Peterson.

It certainly has made it tougher to compete with clubs like The Edison and Le Deux , which do offer the service, she says.

Bottle Backlash?

But a recent poll, done in conjunction with Zagat Survey’s Guide to LA Nightlife, found there was a certain backlash against bottle service among clubgoers who say it has turned dance clubs into elitist dens.

Mynt MiamiMynt Miami

Michael Gogel, promotions manager at Manhattan’s famous Lotus, (where Grey Goose runs $340 a bottle) says bottle service has lost some of its cachet in New York “now that anyone with a credit card can order it.”

But it’s still all the rage in Miami where nightlife/gossip columnist for The Miami Herald, Lesley Abravenel, says “bottle service has become a cottage industry.”

”People are blowing their paychecks just so they can feel like a ‘VIP,’ if just for one night,” she says. “I’ll never forget going out one night with a high roller, who insisted on being front and center, on the most exclusive VIP couch in the house. He paid $1,000 for a $40 bottle of Veuve Clicquot … He had the time of his life while I just left shaking my head.”

But people are paying for much more than just that bottle of vodka or Champagne says Sean Christie, who manages the popular Blush nightclub at Wynn Las Vegas.

“You’re paying for prime real estate, for a desirable spot that everyone else wants,” he says, “It’s like going to Yankee Stadium and sitting behind the dugout.”

Christie says bottle service drives more than half of any club’s profits, if not more. In Vegas, the insane amounts of money bottle service generates is driving “a whole new category of top-tier nightclubs,” each more lavish than the next.

The venues have to distinguish themselves because bottle service itself is pretty basic. At Blush, customers can have unfinished bottles kept for them for up to a week.

And while many clubs in Vegas light sparklers when someone orders a very expensive bottle, at Blush, they stop the dance music and play the theme song from a movie like Rocky or Mission Impossible.

A pricey perk for sure.

Beautiful People: Miami

Unless you are blind, you don’t need a silly survey to tell you that Miami has the hottest people on the planet. Just try walking down Lincoln Road on a Saturday and I bet you 5 bucks you won’t be able to keep your jaw from dragging on the sidewalk. But if you need proof you can check out the online survey of “America’s Favorite Cities” by Travel + Leisure magazine. Miami residents were voted as the most attractive people in the United States.

Disclaimer: When you’re in Miami, you kind of take it for granted. Then you travel, and when you come back you say, “Holy S&$T, why did I ever leave!”

Hungry? Check out Miami Iron Fork October 30th

September 9th, 2008

I’ve been seeing a lot written and shown on TV about Miami’s foodie scene and with the South Beach Food and Wine Festival coming up soon, another media stepchild, The Miami New Times, is sponsoring the Iron Fork 2008. This is slated to be a showdown of chefs from more than 20 of Miami’s best eateries, as well as live music and the obligatory after party (a must in Miami). Actually, I’m surprised there’s not an official pre-party and a “get ready to pre-party” party.

In all seriousness, this is going to be pretty cool. We’re talking Dada, Capital Grille, Forte, and Ocean Prime. I’m always down for some good food and the chefs will be bringing their A games as they cook for celebrity judges including Susser, Dean James Max, Clay Conley, Zach Bell, and Michelle Bernstein.

It’s all happening October 30 from 6-10pm at the Miami Science Museum. You can get tickets online for $20 or at the door for $25.

Paris Hilton Sued in Miami Federal Court

September 8th, 2008

Get this — Paris Hilton has been sued in Miami federal court for not promoting a movie she was in, “National Lampoon’s Pledge This.” Below is an excerpt from the Miami Herald:

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton

As if starring in the flop flick “National Lampoon’s Pledge This” wasn’t bad enough, socialite Paris Hilton now has been sued for refusing to promote the film when it was released.

Hilton’s breach of contract cost the producers of the film ”lost revenue and profits,” according to the suit, filed in Miami federal court Tuesday. A call to Hilton’s Los Angeles attorney wasn’t immediately returned. Fort Lauderdale lawyer Michael I. Goldberg, a court-appointed receiver of the film’s production company — The Entertainment Group Fund — filed the suit against Hilton and her company, Paris Hilton Entertainment.

The Entertainment Group Fund is an affiliate of Worldwide Entertainment Group, a one-time concert promoter that now stands accused of fleecing $300 million from investors.

Entertainment Group paid Hilton $1 million to star in “Pledge This,” filmed in South Florida.

Go figure.

Therapy: THE Pool Party in Miami Beach

September 2nd, 2008

Everyone knows South Beach is famous for its sizzling nightlife scene. Whether you are into ultra-lounges, mega clubs or swanky hotel bars, Miami has it all. But the question readers keep asking us is what about the daytime scene?

David Dee from New York sent us the following email last week, “I love visiting Miami Beach in the winter and have been many times — especially during Winter Music Conference. The food in your city is amazing. I’ve hit up Prime 112, Nobu, Blue Door Grill and Ago and can’t decide which one I like the best. At night I’ve been to Mansion, Prive, Mynt, Mokai and the Shore Club. Prive was definitely my favorite, but I had a blast at all of them. I usually come down with a group of dudes and we stay at the Lowe’s or the Delano. The pool scene there is OK, but next time we come down we would like a little more of an aggressive daytime scene. My boys and I are from Long Island and we usually hit up Neptunes in the Hamptons or De Jays in the Jersey Shore. We actually just got back from Vegas and had a blast at the Sunday pool party at the Hard Rock called Rehab. I know you will hook us up with nightlife while we are in South Beach, but do you recommend any pool parties like the ones I described above? Thanks.”

David, we feel you buddy! There is nothing more amazing than an aggressive daytime pool scene. Playing golf during the day is cool for some vacationers, but sipping drinks in the sun while checking out women in bikinis is my cup of tea. Throw in some house music and you’ve got the perfect formula for a great time. Luckily, the Raleigh and the crew well known for the Versace pool party just launched a pool party called Therapy. The event includes world famous DJs, and get this, nurses who are ready and willing to cater to your ailments with the following prescriptions: brunch on the Deck del Mar; a VIP area at the Acqua Lounge; recess on the playground and dancing on La Playa VIP. The party starts at noon. See you there!

How to Turn the Lights on at Mynt

August 18th, 2008

Dennis Rodman makes his entrance at Mynt.

Saturday night at Mynt started out the way most Saturday nights at Mynt start. Flashy, sexy, loud, and full of potential. I was standing around our table sipping on some champagne while DJ Julian Ingrosso played some nasty house, girls danced on the back of huge black platform couches, and beautifully costumed dancers rocked to the beat on illuminated boxes in the center of the floor.

It was around 3am when in walked one of my most favorite people. He had probably gotten the word that Sammy Sosa had been in a month earlier trying to light the place up and decided he was going to do better. It took him about 30 minutes to make his way from the front door to his table, a total of maybe 25 feet. Between the flashes going off, the plume of cigar smoke, and the flock of willing women, the only reason I recognized him was because he stood nearly a foot above everyone else. Dennis Rodman was here to party.

When he finally arrived at his table he apparently placed an order only Dennis Rodman could ask for. What followed was a display of power and respect above anything else I’ve ever witnessed at Mynt. 30 hostesses, all dressed in white and looking amazing, appeared to the side of the DJ booth holding magnum bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne. Rodman said a few words on the microphone as is customary when a celeb shows up at Mynt, thanking everyone for being there and making sure everyone knew he was there to party. He handed the mic back and a few seconds later all 30 of the bottles ignited in white sparks as they were carried over head to a few tables in the front of the room. It was 3am but it might as well have been 3pm. Dennis Rodman had turned the lights on at Mynt, if only for 30 seconds.

I’m glad he’s still living the rock star life - and sharing it with the people wherever he goes.

You should definitely plan on setting up VIP bottle service at Mynt with SoBeVIPs on your next trip to SoBe. This is one place you shouldn’t miss.

Chicago’s Bid For the 2016 Games is…

August 18th, 2008

Pretty darn good.  Maybe it’s all the Olympic hoopla that I’m all caught up in these days, but after seeing this marketing video for Chicago’s bid for the 2016 games I really hope it comes back to the states so I can be there in person. Very, very well done. Makes me want to go back and hang out for a while.
